Being the Way

Being the Way

When I was a kid, I did a lot of folk dancing. We had a learning time at the beginning of each dance session, and I learned a lot. One of my favorite lines came from those sessions, “Do as I do, not as I say.” I liked it so much, because that’s what we do. You can preach to me all you want, but if you aren’t living your lessons, I most certainly am not interested in listening to you.

Walking the talk.

We don’t like to think about it, but we are watched. Our kids watch us, and so do our partners, and neighbors, our co-workers, our community members, our friends. You know, because you watch, too. We don’t mean anything by it, it simply that we are interested in each other.

I don’t think about being watched very much. I have my code, I tend to follow it. Sometimes I am doing, sometimes, I am just being. Every so often I think about what I’m doing. How am I the way I want to be? Am I having fun? Do I feel connected? Do I enjoy what I do? Am I following my passion? Is there something else I want to make time for? Is there a habit I want to change? How could I do that in a way that would be easy?

Most of those questions are not Creative Questions, but they are useful questions.

I have learned about me that if I can find a way to enjoy it, I can do pretty much anything. Each of us has our own values. When I identify my top values, like enjoyment, and make decisions based on them, I have a good day.

Sometimes I get caught up in the doing of stuff and I fall into routines that don’t necessarily support me in a very good way. I can usually tell if I don’t feel content at the end of the day. Once in a while is one thing, but when it is day after day, I may wanna take a look.

Each of us has the capacity to be a leader. We don’t have to try, we just need to live most days in a way that feels good to us from the inside out, in a way that we feel good about our day when we go to bed. Living in congruence with what matters to us automatically makes us leaders.

I like to have fun. I like to feel useful. I like to feel generous and kind. I like to learn. I like to create all kinds of stuff. I like to connect. My passion is writing about this stuff, and I do that every day unless there are extremely exceptional circumstances. I don’t always act on all my top values everyday. I love to hang out with my friends and family, and I love solitude, but they don’t go together. A lot of the learning I do is through reading. When I am reading, I am not creating. It’s a seesaw thing, some days this, some days that, and at the end of a while, stuff is pretty balanced.

That balance is important. It’s nice to feel it inside, and it’s nice outside, too. Some of us will lead in the front, some of us from the middle, some of us from behind. Each of those kinds of leaders is crucial to the well-being of our communities. We tend to notice the ones up front, just because that’s where they are, but think about your best communities, and how you see people leading from other places. While I enjoy public speaking, and love to perform in my choir and other singing groups, I prefer to lead in small groups or one-on-one. It feels more like chatting, and I love to chat.

Leading by example is easy. That’s something else I value, easy. I know how to make things hard, but it usually is kind of exhausting, and doesn’t leave me much energy for having fun. When we lead by example, we are automatically an inspiration to someone who needs a little inspiration. We may never know the impact we have, but we can trust that it happens.

How have I changed from preaching to leading by example?

We’re in the Money

We’re in the Money

How are you rich? Do you have a fine collection of antique clocks? Or maybe a Rembrandt squirrelled away in your closet. Perhaps your bank accounts keep the country running, or you have, as the song says, diamonds on the soles of your shoes?

Me, I discovered that my life is rich beyond measure.

Back in the before times, there were people in my life who told me to count my blessings. I can’t even tell you how much I hated that. Who did they think they were? Couldn’t they see how horrible my life was?

So I acted happy, and pretended everything was okay, and inside I was sour and cynical and sick. And I did not value much of anything.

After all, counting blessings was so square, lame, and geekly. Being depressed and miserable was cool. All the best artists were depressed and miserable.

I was in good company. Except for one thing.

It sucked.

And on some level I knew that I was going to have to give up the idea that “being happy” was lame.

My first glimpse into a possible future of happiness for me was the author, Colette. Oh, my. She was happy. She loved her life and lived it so well. I wanted that.

As I changed my opinion about happy people, I started to find appreciation and gratitude for the people and stuff in my life. And with that sense of thankfulness came a sneaking awareness of how full of treasure my life had become.

I’m not just going on about my priceless jewels of friends and family, or the treasure of health. I’m actually talking about cash money, bread, moolah, greenbacks, cheddar, ducats, and dead presidents.

How do I feel when I am a lady of means? What makes me feel rich? Why do I enjoy my abundance? Why do I prosper? Why am I grateful for my riches?

As I pay my bills, I find myself feeling grateful for the services they provide. I don’t know about you, but I am absolutely crazy for electricity and heat, and cool, depending on the season. I love the freedom my car gives me and the joy I feel driving it around.

The weird thing has been that the more I appreciate what I can do with my cash, the more easily it seems to come to me. How do I double my income?

Another weird thing, the more freely I can give, the more easily it seems to come to me. What makes money flow to me easily?

A third weird thing is that, as I let go of how it should come to me, it shows up in ways that I would never ever have thought of. Most recently as a class action settlement. I mean, really. Why am I open to money?

How have I changed from feeling poor and pinched to feeling luxurious and generous?

The Crabby and Grouchy Show

The Crabby and Grouchy Show

I woke up on the crabby side of the bed today. No reason. Maybe a dream just before I woke up. Crabby.

It hardly ever happens anymore, waking up crabby. Months can go by.

This morning two cards hopped out from the deck, the gratitude card and the genuine card. What a nice way to think about being crabby.

Because I am responsible for my feelings, I don’t pretend I’m not crabby when I am. But I also use two of the funniest sounding words in English to describe it, crabby and grouchy. And I say them to emphasize the silliness of them. I remember that, because I am a resourceful grown up, I can change my feelings as easily as changing my socks.

(And now I am thinking about making sock puppets and calling them Crabby and Grouchy and doing a show. Those words do make it more difficult for me to stay crabby and grouchy.)

I am grateful to all the teachers I’ve had who’ve helped me learn how to change my feelings.

I am grateful to all the teachers I’ve had who’ve shown me the value of my emotions and feelings.

I am grateful to all the teachers I’ve had who give me their respect as I worked my way through.

When we allow ourselves to be ourselves, stuff gets way easier. We stop spending time trying to second guess the other person, and we say what we mean. We go inside for approval that counts highly, and enjoy approval from outside. We are able to ask clearly for help, and accept it graciously when offered.

Easy. Simple. Enjoyable. Why is it all so easy? Why is it all truly simple? Why do I enjoy?

If I’m not worrying about the future, I don’t need to try to control the present. If I’m not worrying about you, I don’t need to try to control you. If I’m not guilty about the past I don’t need to put a spin on it. What a relief.

If I experience my emotions, they flow through me like water. When I stop intellectualizing, my thoughts flow, too. I can play with my creative mind more, more enjoyment, more light, more freedom.

When I am myself, I can relax. I don’t need to prove anything to anyone, I can do the things I need to, and want to, I can decide about the “shoulds.” I mind my business, and take care of my well-being, but I make peace, safe space for you to take care of yours. I treat me and you respectfully, and I can play.

When I am myself, I can sleep peacefully. I can stand on my own two feet, I have good people to back me up. I don’t have to stick my neck out, I can keep my chin up.

And when I wake up crabby, I know that, for a couple hours, I will enjoy the heck out of it.

How have I changed from trying to be someone special, to knowing I already am?
